Oh well it shouldn't be the "weekend Nazi's" with there "weekend MP40's and Mauser's" he should be worried about but rather the angry mobs of Scientologists he managed to upset (and upset him come to think of it).

Well, that turned out to be the usual shit that Sweeney comes out with. Does anyone remember when Panorama used to be a thought provoking and well balanced programme? Yeah, i know. Long time ago.

Question is, we know that the BBC were there reporting on the wedding, but why didnt Rex get one of his employees to check on who else would be with the film crew?

Sweeney went in there for one reason. To crucify German reenactors. If he'd done a bit more digging he'd realise that the regimental histories of other units portrayed at Beltring (on the Allied side) are bloody dubious as well. Take the 2nd Guards (Soviet) for example. The Soviets raped, murdered and pillaged their way through eastern Europe when chasing the Germans back to Berlin. Lets also not forget the mass graves of Polish officers found on the Soviet side of play during the invasion of Poland - the Katyn Massacre, circa 8000 Polish officers & NCO's (many forget that Poland was invaded by the Russians from the East when it was getting invade by the Germans from the west)

Oh, and before we leave the Yanks out of it, we better not forget Pattons "no prisoners" order...

It was war. NO side was 100% squeaky clean. This was lazy journalism. If he were a proper journalist, he'd have looked at ALL the units portrayed by reenactment units.

The docu wasn't meant to be balanced in the sense of discussing who did what to whom in WW2, the subject matter was Nazism / Neo Nazism in the reenacting community, which he found.

The first third of the program gave a reasonable portrayal of Beltring - family event, men and women having a bit of fun and escapism - and showed the popularity of living history.
The second third showed some of the tactlessness and tackiness of Nazi merchandise, both period and modern.
The last third showed the dubious nature of some that attended.
All of which, as a summary, is fair enough.

Some bits were silly, some were downright rude, some was inaccurate, some was sloppy - but that's journalism for you and I expected nothing else!

Being a ex member off the Second Battle Group I must put this in.

Dave has hit it on the head, and Glen from the SBG should have talked to the man and not tryed to wind him up in the beer tent, Glen was not drunk, you could understand what he was saying..

And as for combat 18, they showed up a few years ago and tried to recutie a young SBG member, this was met with them getting a kicking and booted of the site.

As for the cop, SBG do not let you mix uniform and civies, one or the other, which means that he could not have been a member.

Re enacting is always a soft target for a ratings hungry media. Don't forget you are on the extreme end of a fringe , albeit a harmless one.

Looking at our little crew here...... we are all airsofters (10k in the UK?), and a fecking small hobby to start with compared to other sports (1m anglers) , followed by being WWII airsofters , followed by being Germans . We are strange and not really normal in our hobby , though thankfully though we live in a country where we can do this without getting arrested, molested or otherwise stopped.

As for finding people with right wing tenedancies in a military pastime, especially with people who want to re enact the SS , um I'd be more amazed if he had not found any TBH . No slur inteneded, but I doubt there are many Vegetarian Guardian-reading Beardies in the SBG or other groups just through the nature of the activity . In fact if it weren't for me you wouldn't have any on this forum either  Equally I doubt you find many amongst the hunting fraternity .

Sadly the media will always find the story they are looking for, it's sells advertising /justifies their exisitance. The furor last year over Kompanie 1 in the Daily Mail, and tachy Nazi crap at shows only helps feed it when they are looking for "new" stories.

Let em get on with it , lifes too short, and you're never going to convince 99.9% of the UK that its a great pastime they should get into .

I learnt back in the late 80's that the media are quite happy to paint the story they want , especially when they don't want to do the research , and will often find gobby unelected "spokesmen" from whichever group you like to quote from to get the result . You think you're pissed off? , imagine what it was like to be a miner at Orgreave.

Andy from 'Second Battle Group' had someone from the BBC contact him and tell him that they would like to do an impartial film about re-enacting groups, he's now got a solicitor on to the BBC for slander and misrepresentation.
Andy stated that this person was never mentioned when the BBC contacted him, he was told that a different presenter would be doing the program and it was to be viewed from a hobby perspective not a political left wing one.

The BBC lied about the type of program that they were going to make when they asked for permission to film 'Second Battle Group' and Andy asked them on numerous occasions that he would appreciate it if they did not edit the program purely to show a negative aspect of re-enacting groups but of course we all know that was never going to happen.

This was an email from a friend.

Politics happened but then we are not allowed to talk about that due to political reasons. :?

As I have mentioned prev Ch5 seem less biased.

However I can remember the BBC and ITV lying to us 20+ years ago about not giving arms to the Afghans to fight Russians.

The same arms they are using now to kill our lads and other troops.

The ironic thing is that the reenactors on the prog all emphasised that they wanted nothing to do with the political aspect of WW2 and tried their best to be non-controversial yet all Sweeny was interested in was the politics, even bringing in some German academic to add a bit of gravitas (I'm always on guard when someone claims to speak for other people - hell, that brilliant Brit vet wasn't that bothered was he!).

Oh, a bit of a dig from Oddball and that's fair enough. If you set up a political/current affairs forum then I would be happy to participate in mature debates, it's just that here really isn't the place.

Still fuming about the wedding :( waiting on the official line of complaint before I persue it so its all done with consent and contains what my friends would like me to get across.

SBG stuff well didn't do them any favours on the gagging order, big lesson there, it would have been better to have spoken Mr Sweeney would have got bored as he did with the man in the Panzer wrap and went of to persue other people, instead the silence made him stoop to gutter level and unfortunately he got voices of people if its them or not I don't know ... however the lad talking about york needs a large kick up the arse and if I see him oooooo am sure he'll be hunted by the local press they love this kind of thing considering Yorks historical background with the Jewish community  can't see anything yet though

I noticed instantly the body language of both the veteran and of the German historian whilst being interviewed, wonder who else picked up on it ? giggling, lack of eye contact, rolling of eyes even shuffling. Not saying they didn't mean what they said but how comfortable they were is debateable talking about it along with what the rest of the conversation was we'll never know.

And since when have the beeb been trustworthy  christ years ago they claimed spaghetti grew on trees  joking aside though many things they do are one sided and no doubt biased by those of opinion at the top of the ladder ;)

well I made a point of watching that programme, must say not impressed by the standards of journalism displayed. After all with all the crap thats going on in the world why focus on some persons hobby??? Absolutely ridiculous. Also to film and record people in the beer tent is just underhand and to what purpose? We all know that folk tend to talk absolute shoite when lubricated so what direction is he trying to go down? Not very impressive and to find that the wedding filming was a fix too-saying it was for local TV is just underhand and in no way upholding BBC traditions.

For a whole 30-minute program, all they got was a couple of geezers selling poor taste tat, 3 Dutch neo-Nazis hanging around the place, and a couple of tanked up guys talking crap. Not much of a return - wonder how much it cost of our licence fee to make??

I think i shoudl send a photgraph of them in my best Brandengurg Commando kit with my mixed race girlfriend (half trinidadian, half asian) by my side to show what a massive nazi i am :)

She watched the programe with me today and thought it was equally ludicrous.

Maybe i could get my jewish mate Laura to take some pics of herself in her ss tankers kit too...?

What a total hatchet job, i'm sure some re-enactors do have right wing tendancies but i reckon you'd find more nazis at a daily mail readers convention...

Personally I think they were just comparing British to German if they had said Allies to German the % would have significantly changed.
Allies could actually be more in that case, people like the US and German kit but he didn't want to go there did he. :x

Also the W&P is much about vehicles and many of the people that take their hundreds of Jeeps etc are on Allied kit, I would be surprised if there where more than 10% German vehicles at the show. However all he wanted to show was Tiger tanks anyone would think half of the people going there must have driven there in a Tiger tank the way he was portraying it.

AS for the but in the pub tent if he went in just about any pup and started talking about immigration and terrorism etc etc he would get a similar response these days.
Maybe the A-Hole should try the same tactics in his local pup, or perhaps he did as a training exercise.

Perhaps he should try and get an interview with these nice lady's http://home.comcast.net/~jimsondergeld/ ... _Allah.jpg
